Abdala Mbwana Ashikoye

Abdala Mbwana carries the weight of his family’s survival on his frail shoulders. A father of seven children—three daughters and four sons—he resides in Majengo, Kakamega County, where he battles health complications that have left him unable to fend for himself. Once a hardworking mason, he has been without work since December 2021, relying on well-wishers for assistance.

Tragedy struck in 2023, when his wife lost her life in a road accident, leaving him alone to care for 14 grandchildren. That same year, his eldest son was also involved in a road accident, breaking his left leg. Unable to support himself, his son required full-time assistance, but the burden became too heavy for his wife, who eventually left due to poverty. Now, Mbwana is not only responsible for his grandchildren but also for his injured son, who depends on him for even the most basic tasks.

The overwhelming responsibilities, grief, and loneliness have taken a toll on Mbwana’s health. Sleepless nights, stress, and rising blood sugar levels have only worsened his condition. His children were unable to complete their education due to financial struggles, leaving the family with no stable source of income.

In August 2024, Mbwana was enrolled in the Mama Ibado Charity (MIC) feeding program, receiving monthly food rations that have lightened his burden and ensured his family does not go hungry. He also attends MIC’s weekly medical check-ups, where he receives healthcare support, easing the strain of medical expenses.

With this assistance, Mbwana’s health has improved, and the burden on his family has been significantly reduced. Though life remains challenging, the support he receives has helped strengthen the bond between him and his family, providing him with some much-needed relief.

“Life has tested me in ways I never imagined, but the support I receive gives me the strength to keep going,” says Mbwana.
