Akai Jakait once lived a peaceful life in the dry plains of Isiolo County, where she and her late husband relied on their small family farm. When there was water, the land was fruitful; yielding crops and fresh fruits they would sell at the local market to make a living. Their modest income sustained the household and gave them a sense of purpose and pride.

But life changed after the loss of her husband many years ago. Without him, and with the water sources drying up, Akai’s world grew smaller and harder. For about a year now, there has been no water at all, and the once-productive land has turned bare.
