Akai Jakait once lived a peaceful life in the dry plains of Isiolo County, where she and her late husband relied on their small family farm. When there was water, the land was fruitful; yielding crops and fresh fruits they would sell at the local market to make a living. Their modest income sustained the household and gave them a sense of purpose and pride.

But life changed after the loss of her husband many years ago. Without him, and with the water sources drying up, Akai’s world grew smaller and harder. For about a year now, there has been no water at all, and the once-productive land has turned bare. The farm that once fed and sustained her family now stands silent, a painful reminder of what used to be.

Akai, now an elderly widow, lives with four of her daughter’s children. Her daughter, the mother of her grandchildren, does what she can to help, but life remains a struggle. Age and hardship have taken a toll on Akai’s health—her back and knees ache constantly, making even the simplest tasks difficult. Recently, she was diagnosed with hypertension and has been on medication ever since.

Despite the pain, Akai finds strength in her faith and in the support she receives through Mama Ibado Charity. Since being added as a beneficiary of the program, she has started receiving two bags of maize flour every month and attends weekly medical clinics for treatment. These small but vital acts of care have brought immense relief to her household.

“The food from Mama Ibado Charity really keeps me going,” she says softly. “When it ends, we struggle—but I thank God for what I receive.”

Through the seniors’ feeding and healthcare programs, Akai’s hope has been rekindled. She no longer faces hunger alone, and her access to consistent treatment has improved her well-being. Beyond the food and medicine, Mama Ibado Charity has given her something deeper—a renewed sense of dignity, belonging, and peace in her later years.
