Bartholomew Lotome Adome

Bartholomew Loteme has called Isiolo home since birth, growing up in a pastoralist family. Unlike his parents, who found purpose in herding livestock, Bartholomew sought a different path. Driven by a deep love for learning and a sense of duty rooted in his faith, he pursued an education with the dream of facilitating knowledge for others. His strong belief in his mission to spread both the gospel and education, inspired by the disciple he was named after, became the cornerstone of his life’s work.

In 1971, after completing a two-year training program, Bartholomew embarked on a teaching career. He taught Geography, History, and Civics at the primary level. Despite challenging working conditions—often trekking over 15 kilometers on an empty stomach and little rest—he remained committed to his students. "I loved teaching. There was an unexplainable satisfaction in passing on the little knowledge I had," he reflects.

By 1978, Bartholomew’s life took a new turn when he married a young woman he deeply loved. Their union, though filled with moments of happiness, was marred by the devastating loss of all their children. While Bartholomew’s faith grew stronger in the face of this tragedy, his wife struggled to cope. Despite his efforts to comfort her and offer spiritual solace, the weight of their grief overwhelmed her, leading to her illness and eventual passing.

Now retired, Bartholomew devotes his days to farm labor and prayer, holding firm to his belief that idleness is the enemy of a meaningful life. However, his meager pension was insufficient to meet his basic needs, and he often relied on the goodwill of others. It was during this time of struggle that Bartholomew was enrolled in the Mama Ibado Charity Seniors Feeding Program.

The program has been a lifeline, easing his burden and allowing him to live with dignity. Despite the hardships he has endured, Bartholomew’s faith and cheerful spirit remain unshaken. He is a testament to resilience, a life enriched by service, and the transformative power of compassion.
