Berneta Musina Musambai was born in 1949 in Cryingstone, Shinyalu, within Kakamega County. She was one of five children, though she has endured the heavy burden of outliving all four of her siblings. Her father was a laborer for a colonial settler, and the family lived a modest life centered on manual work.
She began her education at a local primary school but was only able to reach standard two before she had to stop. Her father lacked the financial means to keep her in school, and as one of the younger children, the resources had already been exhausted on her older siblings.
