BUSHURU SOFIA ANYONA

Bushuru Sofia Anyona was born in 1955 in the Kabaras region of the Lukume area. She was raised as the firstborn in a family of six children, growing up as a leader among her two brothers and three other siblings.

Her parents deeply valued her education and supported her through her primary and secondary studies. She eventually progressed to Nyanza Commercial College in Kisumu, where she trained as a typist and successfully secured professional employment in the city.

After starting her career, she was transferred back to her home region to continue her work. During this period, a man approached her parents seeking her hand in marriage, a proposal she initially resisted as she hoped to pursue further professional opportunities with her mentors in Kaimosi.

She eventually entered into marriage in Lutonyi, but her life took a difficult turn when her husband forced her to resign from her job, insisting that a wife should not work outside the home. Despite government officials arriving at her house in a vehicle to recall her to her duties, her husband refused to let her leave, ending her career and financial independence.

Life became a struggle as her husband withheld money for basic needs despite having a stable job himself. To survive the growing hunger in her home, her husband introduced her to the brewing of illicit liquor as their only source of income.

This illegal venture brought immense hardship, as she lived in constant fear of law enforcement and faced the social stigma of her community. Engaging in this trade caused her to be sidelined by her people, leaving her isolated and without the traditional support of her neighbors.

The situation worsened over the years as she developed severe arthritis while caring for nine dependents, including one family member who is currently bedridden. She struggled to find food for such a large household while her physical strength failed, eventually learning about the Mama Ibado program through community outreach.

Since being registered, she has received a monthly food basket containing four packets of maize flour, rice, sugar, salt, cooking oil, and porridge flour. This support ensures that her large family has consistent meals, finally ending the era where she had to rely on illegal brewing just to put food on the table.

"The burden of providing for nine people while dealing with my own physical pain and the shame of my past struggles was overwhelming before I received this help. Today, my home is at peace because our basic needs are met, and I no longer have to live in fear or isolation."

Sofia visits the clinic every Thursday for medical check-ups and treatment to manage her arthritis. This healthcare support has allowed her to maintain enough mobility to look after her dependents, though she remains unable to perform the heavy labor required to earn an income.

She remains in need of assistance because her advanced age and chronic illness prevent her from returning to work. With nine people depending on her, including a bedridden patient, the consistent provision of food and medicine is the only thing protecting the family from extreme hunger.
