Yusuf Mohammed Farah was born in 1946 in Kilimani, Isiolo County. Growing up in a family of nine, he faced early hardship when seven of his siblings passed away. He attended Kilimani Primary School until grade three. After his parents died, he was forced to drop out because there was no one to pay his school fees.
Searching for a way to survive, Yusuf moved to Kakamega to find work. He spent his early adulthood taking on manual tasks, such as working in hotels and tilling farms. Through this grueling labor, he saved enough to marry and raise eight children. While he worked hard to ensure they were educated, the family lived a very difficult life.
