For Gabow Hussein, living with asthma has been a long and difficult journey. The condition has affected not only his health but also his ability to work and provide for his daily needs. As an elderly resident of Kambi Garba in Isiolo, Gabow has had to navigate the challenges of managing a chronic illness while facing the difficulties that come with growing older and having limited financial resources.

There was a time when Gabow could work and earn a living to support himself. However, living with asthma gradually made it increasingly difficult for him to continue working. The condition affected his ability to carry out his daily responsibilities, eventually leaving him unable to sustain his livelihood. Losing his ability to work meant losing an important source of independence, making it even harder to meet his basic needs and afford the medical attention and medication required to manage his condition.

His circumstances began to improve when he became part of the Mama Ibado Charity programme. Through the organisation's support, Gabow gained access to its weekly medical clinic, held every Thursday at the Mama Ibado Centre. Since joining the programme, he has been able to attend the clinic for medical consultations and receive treatment whenever he is unwell. The Mama Ibado team also ensures that he receives the medication he needs to manage his asthma, easing the financial burden of seeking regular medical care.

Having access to the Thursday clinic has made a meaningful difference in Gabow's life. Instead of struggling to find the means to visit a healthcare facility whenever his condition worsens, he has a consistent point of access to medical attention. The availability of treatment and medication provides reassurance that his health concerns can be attended to when they arise.

In addition to healthcare support, Gabow benefits from Mama Ibado Charity's monthly food assistance programme. He receives a food hamper containing essential household supplies, including maize flour, rice, cooking oil, tea leaves, salt and other essential household items. With his illness having affected his ability to work and earn an income, this assistance helps him meet his everyday food needs and reduces the financial pressure of providing for himself.

For Gabow, the support extends beyond the practical assistance he receives. It means having access to healthcare without constantly worrying about the cost of treatment and knowing that his basic nutritional needs are also being considered. He speaks with gratitude about Mama Ibado Charity's efforts and believes that more institutions and government departments should extend similar support to vulnerable members of society. He recognises that many older people face difficulties in accessing food and healthcare and that consistent assistance can make a significant difference in their lives.
