Hawo Mohamed Abdi

Born in Isiolo, Hawo’s life has been shaped by relentless struggles and unwavering resilience. As a young girl, she spent her childhood assisting her mother with household chores, preparing for a future she had little control over. Married at just 17, she became a mother to three daughters and one son, raising them in a household where every day was a fight to survive.
Her husband, a watchman, worked tirelessly to provide for the family. But their fragile stability crumbled when he lost his job due to an eye condition. With no income, poverty tore them apart, forcing Hawo to fend for herself and her children alone.
With limited options, she turned to begging and took up occasional housemaid jobs in the village. Despite her best efforts, her children were unable to attend school, locked out of opportunities by their financial struggles. Tragedy struck again when her firstborn daughter passed away, leaving behind two orphaned children—now Hawo’s responsibility.

But life’s trials did not stop there. Her only son was diagnosed with a mental illness, while another daughter sought refuge with a relative. Her remaining daughter, though married, struggled with her own hardships and rarely visited. The mounting stress took a toll on Hawo’s health, leading to high blood pressure and ulcers, further complicating her daily survival.

While begging in town, Hawo learned about Mama Ibado Charity (MIC). Seeking assistance, she visited their office and shared her story. The MIC team assessed her situation and, recognizing her needs, enrolled her in the seniors’ feeding program.
For the past 12 years, Hawo has been a beneficiary of MIC’s feeding program, receiving essential food assistance and weekly clinic services that help her manage her health conditions.

Today, Hawo lives with her mentally challenged son and her two orphaned grandchildren. Though life remains a challenge, the support she receives has lightened her burden, allowing her to face each day with renewed strength.
