Mariamu Roby Ismail was born in Amalemba, where she grew up as the third child in a large family of ten children. Her early life was shaped by the dynamics of a bustling household where resources had to be shared among many siblings. Being among the eldest, she witnessed the daily efforts required to sustain such a significant family unit from a very young age.

Her journey through formal education was cut short, as she only managed to study until class two. Her parents were unable to afford school fees because neither her mother nor her father had steady employment at the time. Consequently, the doors to the classroom closed early for her, forcing her to find other ways to contribute to her family’s survival.

After leaving school, Mariamu transitioned into domestic labor, working as a house help in town to earn a living. She spent her young adulthood dedicated to this demanding work, navigating the challenges of employment to support herself. This period of her life was defined by the transition from a young girl to a hardworking woman performing manual tasks.

Mariamu later married and had three children, though she faced the loss of one child and later her husband, who suffered from a long illness before passing away. Left as a widow, she worked tirelessly as a laundress for families in town to ensure her remaining children could finish their secondary education. Despite her hard work, there were many days when the family faced severe hunger and went to sleep without a single meal.

"The transition from the constant fear of hunger to having a guaranteed monthly supply has restored my peace and allowed me to focus on my well-being," says Mariamu Roby.

Her breakthrough came through a friend named Neima, who introduced her to the Mama Ibado organization and helped her through the registration process. Through this program, she now receives a consistent supply of essential food items including maize flour, rice, and sugar. This intervention has been a turning point, providing her with the basic necessities that were once so difficult to secure on her own.

Comparing her past to the present, Mariamu feels a sense of profound relief because the stress of finding food for her household has been lifted. In addition to the nutritional support, she benefits from the program's health initiative, which allows her to visit the clinic every Thursday for a regular check-up. This medical care is vital for her, as it ensures she remains healthy and strong despite the physical toll of her many years of manual labor.

"Having access to professional medical check-ups every week has given me a new lease on life and the strength to see my grandchildren grow," notes Mariamu Roby.

Mariamu still needs ongoing assistance because she is no longer able to perform the heavy laundry work that previously sustained her. Although her children finished school, they only manage to find irregular, low-paying odd jobs and cannot fully support her daily needs. Continued help is essential to ensure she maintains her health and has a reliable source of nutrition in her senior years.
