Laurent Lusololi

Laurent Lusololi was born in 1946, growing up alongside his four siblings as the second-born child in his family. During his childhood, the household faced severe financial limitations, which meant that Laurent and his siblings never had the opportunity to attend school.

Instead of receiving a formal education, he spent his early years supporting his parents to keep the household running. He dedicated long days to helping his father shape clay pots for sale and performing manual labor on neighboring farms to help secure food for the family.

When he reached adulthood, Laurent married and worked tirelessly to build a stable life for his household. He and his wife were blessed with two daughters, but providing for them required constant effort.

To ensure the family had meals, they performed demanding agricultural tasks, clearing land and weeding fields for neighbors daily. Even with their hard work, regular food remained difficult to secure, and the family sometimes went to sleep without a meal when manual labor was unavailable.

As time went on, the family faced further hardships that disrupted their hopes for the future. Laurent was able to support his first daughter's education until class five and his second daughter until class six before funds were entirely exhausted.

Both daughters later married, but they were both left as widows after their husbands passed away.

The first daughter sought to provide for the family by taking up domestic work in Nairobi, but she suffered a severe leg injury from a sharp iron sheet. The wound became severely infected, and she now faces the difficult reality of a potential leg amputation. To keep the household afloat, the second daughter now sells vegetables on the roadside, while Laurent resides in a basic two-room, semi-permanent house with a roof that leaks heavily when it rains.

The decades of intense physical labor took a heavy toll on Laurent's health, leaving him to manage severe arthritis, visual challenges, and a severe hearing impairment.

Their difficult circumstances changed for the better when the local village elder, visited their home. Recognizing Laurent’s urgent need for support, the chief submitted his details to the Amalemba office. On December 4, 2023, Laurent was welcomed into the senior citizens' program, which brought immediate relief to the household through regular supplies of rice, maize flour, sugar, and cooking oil.

The nutritional support stabilized the home, while consistent medical attention helped restore his physical well-being. Every Thursday, Laurent attends the medical clinic for check-ups and treatment to manage his arthritis, vision, and hearing challenges.

"We used to go without meals when daily labor was hard to find, but this program has restored our peace of mind completely. My brother now has reliable food, and his health is being cared for in a way we could never manage alone."

Even with this life-changing assistance, Laurent continues to live in a fragile house with a compromised roof. Continuous donor funding remains essential to ensure he can consistently access his weekly medical treatments and the targeted nutrition required to maintain his health.
