MATERWA MATROBA LUVONJA

The quiet compound in Shitao village carries the weight of decades of survival, where Materwa Matroba Luvonja relies on her widowed daughter-in-law, Angela Murandizi, for her daily existence.

Born in 1935 in the plains of Maragoli, Materwa was raised in a home where basic needs were scarce.

Her formal education ended abruptly at the fourth grade due to financial constraints at home. After leaving school, she returned to the family homestead to engage in manual weeding and household chores to support her parents.

This pattern of hard labor dominated her teenage years, as she lacked alternative options for self-advancement.

She later entered into marriage with Francis Matekwa, a former local security guard, and relocated to Shitao, where they built a small semi-permanent mud house.

The couple had eleven children, composed of five daughters and six sons. Raising such a large family on a guard’s minimal salary forced them to look for irregular day labor on neighboring farms, and there were many nights when the family went to sleep with empty stomachs.

The household faced a massive setback when her husband, Francis, died, leaving the entire family without a primary provider. Life became significantly harder as three of her adult sons passed away in close succession, while the remaining three sons fell into unstable, low-paying manual jobs without any reliable income.

Her five daughters married and moved away to face their own financial struggles, leaving Materwa with three young dependents under her care. Angela, her daughter-in-law, also lost her husband, creating a household of two widows trying to scrape together food through irregular farm labor.

As Materwa aged, her physical health declined completely, leaving her with profound hearing loss that requires people to shout directly into her ear to communicate. The inability to afford healthcare or steady food meant that the family often experienced prolonged periods of hunger, with Materwa sitting in their quiet mud house, waiting for Angela to find manual labor.

A turning point arrived when the local assistant chief visited the homestead and documented her living conditions and hearing disability. He forwarded her details to the Mama Ibado Charity, which formally enrolled her into the senior’s food program on May 8, 2019, naming Angela as her designated caregiver. The household now receives four bags of maize flour, two kilograms of sugar, two liters of cooking oil, porridge flour, tea leaves, and salt every month.

The consistent provision of these rations successfully stabilized the household's nutritional needs and eliminated the daily panic of starvation.

"We used to go weeks wondering how we would feed our elderly mother while managing our own small children on zero income. The program has restored our family's dignity because the monthly food supplies arrive on time, allowing us to keep her healthy and secure."

This reliable food security ensures that Materwa receives proper nutrition in her old age without placing an impossible financial burden on her widowed daughter-in-law. The intervention keeps the family intact despite their lack of formal employment.

Materwa still requires regular donor assistance because her advanced age of 91 and total hearing loss leave her entirely dependent on others. Continued support is essential to ensure that this elderly widow does not slide back into severe food scarcity during her final years.
