Mirera Dickson's early life was shaped by the harsh realities of poverty. Born into a family of subsistence farmers, Dickson worked alongside his father, planting maize for food and growing coffee to sell to processing factories. However, his father's hard work was exploited by factory owners who paid farmers a meager amount while profiting immensely.
Determined to break free from this cycle, Dickson became a woodcutter, earning Ksh 50 cents (CAD 0.005) per foot of timber split.
