Ndechele Janesa Mate was born on April 30, 1951. She began her education in 1961 and successfully reached Standard Seven. Her formal schooling ended abruptly after her final exam because her family could not afford the necessary school fees to continue.

By the age of 18, Janesa married. She and her husband were blessed with seven children, though four tragically passed away, leaving her with three surviving daughters. Her husband, Musa, became ill in 1993. His illness lasted until 2010, when he passed away, leaving Jerusa a widow.
