Ngamoe Lokorkai

Born in Baragoi, Samburu County, Ngamoe’s childhood was marked by unimaginable tragedy. As a young girl of seven, her family of eight—including her parents—was brutally killed by bandits. Ngamoe narrowly escaped death, her life forever changed in an instant. Rescued by police, she was taken to Baragoi town, where an uncle reluctantly took her in.

Instead of finding refuge, Ngamoe faced daily abuse. Denied an education, she spent her days looking after her uncle’s children, enduring beatings and insults. Her youth was marked by misery, and at twenty, she was married off to an older man against her will.

Her marriage brought no relief. Ngamoe endured relentless abuse, bearing eight children in a household where her husband controlled every aspect of her life. Even her in-laws turned a blind eye to her suffering, blaming her for the family's troubles.

The turning point came when her husband refused to provide food for their children. A friend intervened, helping Ngamoe find the courage to leave. With her children in tow, she began a new, burning charcoal to scrape together a living. Their poverty was so extreme that even basic meals were a struggle.

One of her older daughters left to seek work in Nairobi, offering hope for a better future. Sadly, tragedy struck again when the daughter passed away, leaving behind three orphaned grandchildren. Once more, Ngamoe found herself the sole provider, now caring for four children and three grandchildren.

Her health deteriorated, and she was diagnosed with a terminal illness. Weak and aging, she resorted to begging to keep her family afloat. Despite her resilience, life was a relentless uphill battle.

In 2022, a lifeline appeared when Mama Ibado Charity enrolled Ngamoe into its seniors’ feeding program. For the first time, she received consistent food support, easing her burdens. Today, though she still grapples with health challenges, she faces each day with renewed hope and dignity.
