Peter Peta Lojakait

Peter Peta Lojakait grew up in the archaeologically rich Turkana settlement of  Lokori, where his youth was filled with a blend of hard work and lively traditions. Days were spent herding cattle, while nights brought festivities that showcased the spirited culture of his community. Among these was alogita, a game where young men armed with branches engaged in playful combat, culminating in a feast of goat meat and joyful dances with young women from the village.

Lojakait’s life took a more serious turn after securing a bride and dedicating himself to herding cattle to support his growing family. But his community’s peace was shattered by the Ngoroko bandits, who ambushed their settlement, killing people, seizing livestock, and driving survivors off their land. Unarmed and defenseless, Lojakait and his family fled to Isiolo County, where they have lived for the past 30 years. Poverty, malnutrition, and illness have defined their existence in exile.

Now in his seventies and frail, Lojakait’s days are marked by his enduring resilience. His evenings are spent under a tree with fellow elders, sharing light conversations or peaceful silences, a rare comfort in his otherwise arduous life.

Life began to shift for Lojakait with the intervention of Mama Ibado Charity (MIC). Through their seniors’ feeding program, he receives nutritious meals that have alleviated his long-standing struggle with malnutrition. Access to regular healthcare, facilitated by MIC, has helped manage his frail health, giving him the strength to participate more actively in his community. Beyond the tangible aid, MIC has restored Lojakait’s sense of dignity and belonging, providing hope in his twilight years.
