RAJABU MWANAMISI CHAI

Rajabu Mwanamisi Chai sits quietly outside at her home in Shitungu village, currently residing in a house built by well-wishers after her previous roof collapsed. Born in 1938 as the second child in a large family of twelve, she grew up facing immense resource constraints alongside her eleven siblings, six of whom passed away over the years.

Her formal education was extremely brief, beginning at a local school before stopping in the earliest classes because her father was blind and lacked the financial means to continue paying for her schooling. Left at home without an education, she spent her childhood and youth engaged in hard manual labor, helping her mother weed farm fields and handle heavy household chores daily.

Adulthood brought the responsibility of marriage in Shitungu village, where she gave birth to five children and fought tirelessly to raise them despite crushing poverty. Three of her children passed away, leaving her to endure grueling odd jobs like weeding neighbor's farms just to earn a small handful of food to keep the remaining children alive. Her husband worked as a driver until he fell severely ill for eight months and passed away, leaving her alone to face destitution and empty stomachs.

Her children struggled to secure stable employment because they lacked proper education, leaving her son to do motorcycle transport work and odd jobs. Life became intensely burdensome as she carried the heavy responsibility of raising three young grandchildren left behind in her care while battling chronic health issues like high blood pressure and painful joint arthritis.

A connection through a family member eventually introduced her to Mama Ibado Charity, leading to a home visit where coordinators assessed her severe destitution and enrolled her in the seniors program.

"Now we no longer sleep hungry, and I have less stress of where to get food, as I can focus my energy on other daily survival needs."

Today, she receives essential monthly food packages containing maize flour, sugar, cooking oil, and porridge flour that sustain her household.

Despite this vital assistance, Rajabu still needs urgent help because her high blood pressure and chronic body pains make survival extremely difficult as she ages without financial resources.
