Born and raised in Nyeri County, Samuel Muriuki Karumuchu spent most of his life working hard to provide for his family. Coming from a humble background, he learned the value of perseverance early on. After years of dedication and service, Samuel eventually retired—marking the end of one chapter and the uncertain beginning of another.

Following his retirement, Samuel faced a new challenge: deciding where to spend his later years. His son had already moved to Isiolo, and often told him that life there was peaceful and manageable, with land available for those who wanted to farm. Encouraged by his son’s words, Samuel decided to relocate to Isiolo in the year 2000, hopeful that he could build a quiet life after years of work.

But life in Isiolo was not as easy as he had imagined. With no steady income and rent to pay, Samuel found himself struggling. “I had nothing to do,” he recalls. “Life became hard.” Despite the hardship, he held onto hope. When his retirement benefits finally came in, he made a wise decision that would later change his life—he bought a small piece of land. With patience and determination, he built a traditional house using what little he had.

Even then, things were still difficult. Samuel’s income was gone, and his health began to decline. His struggles did not go unnoticed. The local cluster head in his community saw the challenges he was facing and decided to step in.  That introduction marked a turning point in Samuel’s life. “She saw I was struggling,” he says softly. “She wanted to introduce me to Mama Ibado Charity.” After joining the program, Samuel began receiving consistent support. The charity built him a new, permanent house, allowing him to move out of his old traditional one. For the first time in years, Samuel could rest without worrying about rent or repairs.

The transformation didn’t stop there. Today, Samuel receives monthly food rations that ensure he never goes hungry and healthcare support that provides the medication he needs to manage his health. These simple but life-changing interventions have brought stability, peace, and dignity back into his life.
