Sulumena Aluseshe

Mama Sulumena, a widow from Mukango, Kakamega County, has lived a life defined by hard work, sacrifice, and perseverance. In her younger years, she was a strong and energetic daughter, tirelessly assisting her parents with domestic chores—fetching firewood, water, and caring for her younger siblings.

Despite never having the opportunity to join formal education, Sulumena took the initiative to acquire basic literacy and arithmetic skills, enabling her to communicate effectively with her peers and navigate life with confidence.

She was blessed with a modest family, and alongside her husband, they worked hard to provide for their children. Their commitment to education ensured that their children attended primary school, though financial constraints prevented them from pursuing higher education.

However, at 40 years old, Sulumena’s health began to decline. She started experiencing pain and difficulty moving her lower limbs, slowly losing her ability to perform domestic and farming duties. Together with her family, she sought medical treatment, but the costs were overwhelming, forcing them to turn to traditional remedies, which, unfortunately, did not work.

As her condition worsened, the financial burden grew heavier, pushing the family deeper into poverty and debt. In the midst of her struggles and declining health, she suffered the devastating loss of her husband, further deteriorating her situation. With no access to proper treatment, Sulumena completely lost her mobility, leaving her with a severe disability.

Due to these difficult circumstances, Sulumena was referred to the seniors' feeding program for support. In July 2023, she was enrolled, and since then, she has been receiving a monthly food basket.

Now bedridden, Sulumena relies entirely on her daughter, who is her primary caregiver. She also benefits from Mama Ibado Charity’s weekly healthcare clinics, where she receives medical attention and essential medication.

Despite the many challenges she has endured, Sulumena remains hopeful, grateful that she no longer has to worry about food or medical care.

“I never thought I would receive this kind of support in my old age. I am thankful for those who make this possible,” she says.
